Challenge
To improve the storage
and retrieval of SoundStorm’s extensive library of
movie sound effects, and prepare these effects for mixing
into soundtracks under development. SoundStorm is a premiere,
Academy Award-winning post-production sound studio providing
a full range of services ranging from DVD
mastering to sound editorial and design for
dozens of major motion pictures.
Solution
Prior to consulting
GeniusLabs, SoundStorm’s storage and retrieval of sound
effects involved manually searching through hundreds of
archived analog tapes to find the appropriate sound
effect for a soundtrack under development. SoundStorm’s
estimated that its sound engineers lost an average of
one hour per day because of their inefficient knowledge
management system.
After analyzing SoundStorm’s unique process of
sound effect searching, retrieval, and manipulation,
GeniusLabs developed an affordable client-server
application that allowed SoundStorm’s sound engineers to
electronically search a well-organized database of now
digitized sound clips, and retrieve these sound clips
for easily manipulation in SoundStorm’s audio mixing
studio.
Technology
Using a 32-bit
ActiveX interface, GeniusLabs enabled SoundStorm
employees to quickly connect to properly indexed files
on a SQL Server backend system. By taking advantage of
the flexible ActiveX development model, SoundStorm was
able to save thousands of dollars by utilizing the
processing power of their own PC’s for simple file
manipulation, while using a central database store to
track sound clips, categories, and usages.
Results
SoundStorm increased their productivity over
150%, as GeniusLabs’ greatly improved sound effect
searching and retrieval system dramatically decreased
average project completion time. SoundStorm also
reported an audible improvement in long-term sound
quality, due to the conversion from analog sound storage
to high fidelity, low-degradation digital storage.
